IELTS Vocabulary: Toys and gender

We discussed this IELTS Speaking Part 3 question in class today. Most students responded well to the question – perhaps they found it easy – and had something to say about the topic. They could also relate the question easily to their own childhood and that of their children.

In fact, many great thinkers have raised and discussed the same question for years now. Roland Barthes, a great French philosopher, wrote an essay on ‘Toys’ which linked toys and gender for the first time.

Want to be an activist? Start with your toys.

McKenna Pope’s younger brother loved to cook, but he worried about using toy kitchen sets which were marketed for girls. So at age 13, Pope started an online petition that forced a giant toy manufacturer to include boys into its marketing campaign. In this video, Pope talks about why gender-neutral toys are important.
