IELTS Writing Task 1 – Model answer

Here is the answer to last week’s question (see the bar chart here):

 

The bar chart in figure 5 compares Americans between the ages of 20 and 29, in terms of sex and insurance status, who were unable to afford medical care in 2008.

It is clear that the uninsured were least likely to get medical attention when required, and irrespective of insurance, women had less access to healthcare. It is also noticeable that uninsured women comprised the majority of population who did not get medical attention when they needed it.

If one considers all Americans in this age group – regardless of coverage status – the chart shows that 9.6 percent of men couldn’t afford medical care while 10.6 percent of women faced the same problem.

However, there was a stark difference in numbers according to insurance status. Among the privately insured, only 4.3 percent of men and 5.6 percent of women were unable to get medical care, while the number of uninsured Americans who couldn’t afford medical care was nearly five times as much. (161 words)

In Part 6 and Part 7 of this series – Understanding charts and graphs – you analyzed a table of data. Now let’s look at some ways to describe the data in this chart.

Here is the sample Writing Task 1 question.

 

The table below shows changes in the devices used to access the internet by US adults in 2012 and Q1 of 2013. Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information shown below.

IELTS Writing Task 1: Understanding charts and graphs (Part 7)

IELTS Writing Task 1: Understanding charts and graphs (Part 6)

Last week, we analyzed a line graph and reviewed / learned useful vocabulary for the IELTS Writing Task 1.

This week, we’ll learn to analyze tables and describe them. Tables, bar charts and line graphs are the most common visuals used in Task 1. It is very important to understand the data the table represents so that you can write an accurate description.

Look at this table and answer the questions below.

IELTS Writing Task 1: Understanding charts and graphs (Part 2)

Let’s do some more work on understanding charts and graphs in IELTS Writing Task 1.

Below is a brief description of the graph I posted yesterday. I want you to draw the missing parts of the graph from the description. You might want to print a copy of the graph or draw a rough version in your notebook.

IELTS Writing Task 1: Understanding charts and graphs (Part 1)

What’s more important in IELTS Task 1:

  1. Understanding the chart, or
  2. The way you present the information

The answer is both. And they’re both equally important. Many teachers and websites will give you lists of words and phrases to use in each IELTS task. They are focusing on Step 2 of the writing process. Let’s focus on Step 1. Look at the figure below and answer the questions.
